Introducing Truck Upfitters Premium Gas Struts, designed specifically for the rear doors of camper shells. These gas struts are compatible with well-known brands such as ARE, Snugtop, Leer, ATC, and Century, among others. However, it's essential to note that they do not fit every camper shell model or brand. Therefore, we highly recommend measuring your existing struts before making a replacement purchase. These struts are rated at 40 lbs and are ideal for medium-weight rear or side camper doors. For additional sizes and pressure options, please visit our Amazon Truck Upfitters store.
Installation Guidelines:
Pressure Note: It's crucial to understand that gas struts cannot be compressed manually. If you find that they are unresponsive to hand pressure, they are not defective. A considerable amount of force is needed to compress these props.
Installation Position: Always install the gas struts in the extended/open position. Attempting to compress and install them while they are compressed is not advisable. Before installation, ensure that your door is fully open, allowing the gas struts to be extended.
Safety First: For safety reasons, enlist the help of another person to hold the door in the extended position while you remove the old gas strut. Avoid using a broomstick or any similar tool as a prop, as the door could fall and cause injury or damage to your vehicle.
Removing Old Struts: To detach the old gas strut, gently lift the retaining band with a small screwdriver and pull the gas strut end away from its mount. There's no need to remove the retaining band entirely; just lift it enough to allow the nylon head to detach.
Installing New Struts: For proper installation, ensure that the wider black portion of the gas strut (the body) is positioned on top, while the silver shaft lies at the bottom when the door is in the closed position. This orientation helps maintain proper oil levels within the strut, preventing seal damage and loss of pre-charged air, which could lead to failure. After alignment, simply press the nylon end head of each gas strut onto the 10mm ball mount without lifting the band.
Measure Before You Order:
Make sure to verify the lengths and pressures required prior to ordering, as these struts do not fit all canopy and cover brands. Measurements should be taken from the center of one ball mount to the center of the other, fully extended and also fully closed; do not measure from end to end of the strut. Using a tape measure to ascertain the correct size is essential, as most installations allow for a 1-5% variation in size.
Each package includes a pair of 40 lb gas struts, with an extended length of 12.2 inches and a compressed length of 7.5 inches. These struts are tailored for medium-weight camper shell doors, typically supporting a door weight in the range of 50-70 lbs, including the weight of any locks or keys.
Compatibility also extends beyond camper shells; these gas struts can be used in various applications, including RV doors, boat hatch spring lifts, storage bed lifts, and more. Please note that they are not suitable for steel toolboxes. They are designed to fit most aluminum Weatherguard toolbox models, as well as various truck canopies and gas lift brands, ensuring versatility in your upgrades.
